Perfusion Recellularization
Perfusion recellularization begins with organ scaffolds created by perfusion decellularization. These scaffolds are capable of receiving and incorporating a variety of cell types, depending on the organ scaffold utilized. Perfusion decellularization enables organ scaffolds to retain their native vasculature and so cells are introduced through existing vascular pathways.
Miromatrix has developed an automated system that mimics natural vascular mechanics as cells grow and mature inside the recellularizing organs. Moreover, as cell type discovery continues to grow, the fact that scaffolds created with this technology are of a natural biological design makes them an ideal template to support the growth and differentiation of stem cells into functional tissues and organs. As specific cells are introduced via perfusion they migrate to the appropriate microenvironment. The organs are then grown and matured in bioreactors under normal physiological conditions.
We believe the resulting organs can be transplanted utilizing the same techniques as current organ transplantation. The recellularization of each organ poses its own set of unique challenges. Our organ teams continue to make significant strides in developing recellularized organ therapies.
